Re: Held hostage

Concerning the free will argument why evil is allowed--think of this. The Germans violated the Jews free will to do good or evil by gassing them. A mugger violates a person's free will by mugging and stabbing them. The victim's freedom to to good or evil was interfered with by the mugger killing th...

Re: Held hostage

I was just talking to a coc person on the phone, and I told her that the God presented by the coc seemed more like an abusive husband. But yes, I feel so much more free having left the church. When I think about the Bible story at a high level, it just sounds ridiculous. God created man, purposely ...

Re: Fear

It's really sad sometimes to look back on all of the relationships that God destroyed because of how influential the CoC/teachings were.

Re: CoC funerals

The preacher who spoke at my mom's funeral did just the same; preached more about obedience to God and less about her life/celebration of her. Has anyone had experiences with going to the funeral of someone who had 'fallen away'? I've gone to a few and the speakers/preachers Never once acknowledged ...

Welcome to the community!

I hope that you feel welcomed and accepted here.
I went to school and even did mission work in Jamaica with a lot of folks from the Minnesota CoCs.
Seems to be the near Mecca of the CoC, lol.

Welcome to the community; I'm thankful that you and your brothers made it out.
It seems that we all have scars from our experiences with the church, but we made it!

Re: Trying to find courage

Welcome to the community; we accept you as you are. Although you may feel alone and lost in the wilderness, you are not alone. I survived a year at FC (second generation), went from '08-'09. Most, if not all, of my family is practicing moderate CoC. I left the church four years ago. Despite harsh cr...

Re: Fear

Looking back I can see clearly that the control comes from instilling fear and guilt. At the time, growing up in the coc, I never saw it that way. I didn't think I was being controlled. I didn't think an unrational fear of hell was keeping me from questioning the church. I didn't think shame was ke...
