Child Baptism

Not infant baptism; Child baptism. Let's set a parameter of past the toddler stage and when the child can speak in sentences. What was the youngest child you saw baptized? For me, it was a 7 year old (which interestingly is when many of the Lutherans will consider first communion and I believe it is...

Re: Portray of CoC in popular media

Montgomery Gentry name dropped the CoC from time to time. I specifically remember a line in the song "My Town": Come Sunday mornin' service at the church of Christ Well, there ain't an empty seat to be found I have never witnessed that problem, even in churches that were only built to hold...

Re: What kind of movies do You prefer?

I took my brother to the theater on Christmas Eve and we watched "The Iron Claw" which is about the Von Erich wrestling family who ran shows around Dallas in the 70s and 80s. I thought it was quite good although there was one scene that was very difficult for me to watch. If you are famili...

way behind the eight ball when it comes to speaking the English language in any sort of educated manner. . . Sadly, they were also uneducated. Lot's of good points in the whole post. This one particularly resonated with me. My brother and father both mangle the English language like a car that slid...

Re: Question about what is taught to CoC preachers?

Taking a class or two on Greek and actually having any proficiency are entirely different things. Introductory Greek is fairly comparable to a high school Spanish or French class, with the exception that you have to learn a new written alphabet. Also, some of the preacher training schools do not, in...

Re: Discussion about Billy Graham?

My experience was that opinions of Graham broke down along educational lines. The better educated (indoctrinated) CoC people tended to loathe him and write him off as a false teacher. The simpler folk tended to secretly like him a bit and maybe even listen to his radio broadcasts or whatever. These ...

Re: What did your coC teach about the Trinity

Because of their general refusal to do academic theology and use theological vocabulary, it is sometimes difficult to judge what is being taught. Also, the lack of accountability beyond the local area tends to allow guys to preach for years with odd views of this doctrine. I've heard or read virtual...

Re: Israel and the 2nd coming.

When I was a CoC preacher the rule of thumb was: don't preach on the Revelation until you're 40. That's stupid, particularly since most of those guys don't learn anything after the age of 23. People were generally averse to studying the book and the apocalyptic portions of the prophets. However, the...

Re: Trend in Church Denominations

When I lived in San Antonio there were whole sections of mega churches. There was an exit off of 1604 that had Hagee's church and several others. Another off of I-35 as you were getting up to Schertz that had a bunch. Even the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and the Roman Catholics had mega-churches ...

Re: Changing Church of Christ!

What we knew as the "traditional" coC is vanishing at a pretty good clip. I'd give it maybe another 25 years and there will be few if any groups calling themselves coC that we would recognize from our experience with that name. The reality is that it is either evolve or go extinct. Truth....
