Re: Instrumental music in Church Weddings
I don't understand the coC's concern with leading anyone astray; by their doctrine, it really makes no difference. Everyone is going to hell anyway.

Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?
I saw it done a few times during my years in the hard line coC. It was never pretty and it always seemed to me to be applied very selectively. I was threatened with it when I left the hard line congregation, I was at, for a much more liberal one that the Head Elder's own daughter had gone to. I push...

Re: Pre WW2 CoC
"and a Spanish language service - indicating a reasonably sized Hispanic element nowadays." That is really fascinating. I live in Southeast Ohio now and the two most common churches are Church of Christ and Methodist. I've never seen a Church of Christ advertising a Spanish service. They ...

Re: Salvation by Faith alone? Parable of the vineyards
I always found the coC's teaching on works and salvation to be an extreme example of double speak. My understanding of the doctrine was: Works don't save you but you can't be saved without works. A perfect example of wanting to have a thing both ways. They didn't want to validate their critics' clai...

Re: Christmas at Church?
Little kiddie Christmas parties with Santa have been pretty common place in coC church houses around here for probably 25 years at least. At my old coC they had the party one Saturday and the following Sunday morning, the tree was still up in the "fellowship room" where the S.S. class I ta...

Re: Deathbed conversions/baptisms
I remember at least one preacher in the church I attended as a child used to tell stories about people dying in hospitals wanting to be baptized. Often they had a bathtub big enough for this and sometimes even had to hold their hands over the tracheostomy tube/tracheostomy to perform the immersion....

Re: Ehrman and Strauss's books
There are versions of the book of Esther that has chapters in them not in the Bibles we knew growing up. It has God involved in the planning behind the scenes and explains God's role. It bothers me that the Bible has been edited and changed. You can't prove what is supposed to be there if anything ...

Re: Ehrman and Strauss's books
I always thought it strange that Saul would name his son Ishba'al when Saul, though messing up a lot, never in the Bible worshiped any god but God. I think Saul and Ishba'al if they existed were probably pagan kings retroactively portrayed as God worshippers. Another thing, David is portrayed as ju...

Re: Pre WW2 CoC
In the very earliest days of my CoC preaching I encountered a few old-timers who had come up in that era. From what I gathered it was indeed transitional. They loved the added services - more chances to preach. But what they really always wanted to talk about was how Gospel Meetings could go every ...

Re: Pre WW2 CoC
I've heard many older people say that before WWII the coC only had one Sunday morning worship assembly. The Sunday evening or night assemblies were started during the war because many people had to work on Sunday to support the war effort. So, to accommodate these people the evening service was adop...
