Re: Meeting 5 out of 7 nights each week

So, the congregation that I was a member of during my second stint in the cOC is at it again. I just found out that in addition to the regular services, they now have something happening Sunday afternoon, Tuesday night, of course Wednesday night, Thursday night, and Friday night. The goal is to mak...

Re: Anyone familiar with these lunatics?

Johnny Robertson is a lighter version of Fred Phelps. His show has even been described as "Westboro-like". His sermons bring about a message of hate and he thinks that he and his boys are some sort of prophets. Total nut job. Oh and an ex-convict too. He has done two different stints in p...

Re: Religion and Cultural Appropriation

Mixing aspects of other faiths with yours to make some kind of individual thing is syncretism. It's a sin in Judaism, by the way! I think most monotheistic faiths would view that negatively. But when you look at the 'mystical' or emotional aspects of any religious faith, you tend to find similariti...

Re: Religion and Cultural Appropriation

And then there is cultural APPROPRIATION, where you take those admired events, holidays or ideas, and DECLARE OWNERSHIP of them for your own religious uses. I sometimes attend Catholic holiday services. I'm not Catholic. However, I was raised as a Christian. And Catholics are Christians too, someth...

Re: Religion and Cultural Appropriation

Someone I read once, years ago.....wish I could remember who it was*.....felt that one should best stay and work within whatever religion they were born into. Whoever it was had probably never heard of the cofc. . I've heard that before too, but it makes no sense. We don't choose the religion...

Religion and Cultural Appropriation

I hear about cultural appropriation a lot and wonder how this relates to religious beliefs. Can a religion be appropriated when it should not be? For example, if you were not raised as a Buddhist, is it cultural appropriation to study Buddhism later in life and declare yourself a Buddhist? Or any ot...

Re: Childless, Mothers/Fathers Day and Church of Christ

I understand the point that the pressure can be increased when you have kids and dependents. But it doesn't really help sometimes to hear that "things could be worse" even if it is true. I recall when I was young and single, the guys I worked with were getting paid more and got bigger rai...

Re: Childless, Mothers/Fathers Day and Church of Christ

Actually Statins may cause dementia. Also diet. Alsheimer's is caused by too many carbs in the diet. Coconut oil helps with a ketogenic diet. I was depressed when I was in the CoC. The main reason was that I felt I was too great a sinner to be saved. Most of what I had heard was wrong. I have recei...
