Re: Was I like that?

KLP, I have a copy of the same book about recovering Pharisees and have read it at least 3 times. I would also like to recommend the book Breaking the Bondage of Legalism by Neil T. Anderson, if you don't already have a copy. Both of these books have been helpful on my journey.

Re: The "Never Understoods" List

Thanks for sharing the Ketcherside quote KLP. Ketcherside was very accurate in his observations, and that made him a burr under the saddle of many in the CoC denomination.

Re: The "Never Understoods" List

I never really understood the whole pattern/blue print idea either. In fact the idea of patterns/blue prints just seems totally off base to me. IMO it's nothing but a man-made idea, although many in the CoC would deny that it is because they are sure that the One True Church has never ever been infl...

Re: Actually It's All The Same

Abraham is admired as an excellent example of obedient faith, but the reason Abraham obeyed was because he believed and trusted the promises of God as explained in Romans 4. Abraham didn't obey God because he was legalistic. Legalism is based on human effort and work, and not on trusting God. Legali...

Re: Actually It's All The Same

Yes, the CoC definitely preaches a legalistic, works-based salvation regardless of how strongly they deny it. It seems that they have to deliberately distort such books as Romans and Galatians in order to come up with some of their ideas.

Re: Black-American experiences

Both Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone recognized and accepted the fact that there were Christians in all churches/denominations. Their initial goal was to get all of these Christians to give up their creeds and denominational names, and just unite on the bible. That's what popularized one of the ...

Re: Black-American experiences

I wouldn't claim to be an historian but I have read a few books on the subject. Yes, to a great extent the CoC is the result of Southern white society. When the Stone-Campbell movement eventually split after the Civil War, the Christian Church/Disciples of Christ were predominantly in the northern s...

Re: Seen in public

I remember is a "evangelism" class as a young adult that we should be aware that when someone loses a loved one that they are good candidates to convert since they are thinking about death and the afterlife. So if you have a friend that loses a parent, that is a prime opportunity to appro...
