Re: Meeting 5 out of 7 nights each week

I know some rabid C of C'ers who salivate with excitement over every extra service, Bible study, devotional, etc. Most, of course, do have lives outside church, but for those "faithful" few, any extra time together is exciting for them. Cultish. Does it tend to be the older, retired membe...

Re: Meeting 5 out of 7 nights each week

Wow, that's crazy! I remember back in the day they tried having a bible study on Saturday mornings, mostly geared towards kids but open to all families, and group bible studies divided up regionally at different people's houses on Friday nights. Neither of these lasted long because it was just too ...

Re: Is the Church of Christ a religious cult?

My husband and I did door knocking one time. He hated it. I think it is a waste of time. Did it once when I was 12. We had students from a School of Preaching come to help promote our Gospel Meeting. Even then, I knew it was weird and awkward. Some C of C people swear by door-knocking, and think it...

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

Struggler....I'm surprised you weren't NI!! Your stories surely sound very similar. What were the differences between NI and your church faction? Did they give to "orphan homes"? We did give to orphans' homes, etc. And we did have an addition built that included a kitchen. We had a very s...

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

I think the NICOC is a different breed of CofC. I don’t think I ever experienced anyone being criticized for words they used. That group is really extreme, from what I have read on here. You are so right about that, FF. From what Struggler has said, he has experienced some of the most extreme of al...

Re: Crazy things that happened at the building

A friend told me about a woman who berated her kid for having gas in church.

"You don't TOOT-TOOT during the service!"

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

Here's another one:

I was upbraided more than once for using the word "improvise." I was told not to use such a "high-class" word, that we just "make do."

Re: Childless, Mothers/Fathers Day and Church of Christ

I was often reminded that I didn't have children. Some C of C parent would tell me I had more free time than they did because "you don't have children." So? I told one of them we should trade schedules for a week, and see who has the most free time. He never took me up on that. When a youn...

Re: Childless, Mothers/Fathers Day and Church of Christ

Looking back I can see the people in the coc not showing much empathy over anything. This is rooted in the unspoken belief that if bad things happen to you, you deserve it because you are obviously not living right. Kind of like the mindset Job's friends had. Funny thing is that the C of C'ers I wa...

Re: Crazy things C of C have judged you for.

Saying Humble rather than dropping the H and saying Umble. Umble sounds very old fashioned....they really pronounced it that way? Oh, absolutely. If you pronounced it correctly sounding the H they would tell you "you are being uppity or pretentious". Experienced that, too. I think in some...
