Re: CoC idiosyncrasies

Honestly, I don’t know. It seems like a title. It isn’t “Reverend”, though, which I believe they have a Bible verse for condemning. But as a kid, I would have assumed it to be an unacceptable title. Now “Brother Brown” would’ve been just fine! To be honest, when I was a kid everyone was referred to ...

CoC idiosyncrasies

I’m at my mom’s and was looking through the Christmas music in the piano bench. In the “Winter Wonderland” music, I found the most Church of Christ thing ever: 7A3574DB-9C67-49F1-8398-929302DEC389.jpeg (I don’t know why it’s sideways.) If you can’t see it — “Parson” (in “we’ll pretend that he is Par...

Re: NICOC evolving? Is it possible?

As a child, I remember rarely visiting churches (when we were out of town) where they routinely collected pantry items for the church of christ sponsored children's homes. By the time I was forming memories, my parents had already moved to an NICOC that was against that as an unscriptural work for ...

Re: Not good at intros

Hi. I just found this place. I'm not good with introductions. I'm kinda torn up, struggling, and just need to talk to people who can relate. Glad you're here. We can relate! We're in different places (some of us atheists, others still believers but who escaped or are trying to escape the CoC), but ...

Re: I'm so glad this exists

I've held a lot of anger and spite against the church and my family and even religion in general because of it. I've started going to therapy and I wondered if maybe I could find a support group just like this one when I stumbled across this forum today. I'm hoping since I'm really young that some ...

Re: So glad you are here

I was literally " born in the pew" in the Church of Christ. I went to 2 different Church of Christ Colleges. I even was married to the Precher's Son for 18 horrible years. I divorced him and I left the CofC years ago. Stuck and can't see to heal. I grew up in non instrumental legalistic c...

Re: My current state of belief

Thanks, Lerk! I hope you will be free from attending this church soon! Yet I do understand the need to keep appearances. What finally led you to atheism? Right now I consider myself agnostic with some leanings towards spirituality. I've looked into a UU Church. They are very liberal and don't force...

Re: can anyone explain UU to me?

"Over the River and Through the Woods" is an atheist song. It's a rare "Thanksgiving song" and totally secular. Lydia Marie Child was an abolitionist and feminist, and in 1855 wrote "The Progress of Religions Idea" wherein she "rejected theology, dogma, doctrines, ...

Re: My current state of belief

At the time, there were actually two boards, and they suggested that the other one might be more appropriate for me. I don't actually remember what the difference was -- it's been a long time! I wasn't there to cause trouble, but there were a lot of people who were still traumatized, I think, so the...

Re: My current state of belief

I don't post often, but wanted share an update. After 3 years of research and deliberation, I have decided that I am no longer Christian. ... If any of you read my earlier posts, you will see a completely different tone. At this point I am trying to figure who or what is God. I am not atheist, but ...
