Re: Stopped going 5 months ago and crickets...
Shane, I'd be interested in that book if you could find it. Apparently I spoke too soon. One member texted me last week. Today an elder was checking on my whereabouts. Basically told him I'm trying to figure things. He said I was welcome to meet with the elders at anytime to talk. I'm not ready to t...

Re: Stopped going 5 months ago and crickets...
They still talk with me and think that I can be "saved" by returning to the coC community eventually. There is also a tendency to blame my wife for "leading me astray". It's a reasonable feeling to be concerned, so you're not alone. On this end, my mom was nominally open to the ...

Re: Stopped going 5 months ago and crickets...
Much trickier. I tried telling my parents in 2015 (and even before that) when the congregations in the area I was living in were creepy to say the least. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that they were visiting and finally attended where I'm going. They refused to accept that I have no interest in g...

Stopped going 5 months ago and crickets...
I haven't posted here in a while but do skim through the board at times. Basically I stopped cold turkey in April after going on a trip with a few friends from that congregation. Trip was great! So that wasn't the reason I finally stopped. However since then no one has reached out to me. Not even t...

Re: Repression in the CofC
I've heard from the pulpit that anxiety is lack of faith in God. There is definitely a vibe in the coc (and fundamentalist Christianity in general) that depression is a spiritual issue that you need to solve by praying and reading your Bible more, rather than a brain chemistry issue that nee...

Re: Repression in the CofC
Another thought- I also think it gets in the way of having a REAL and open relationships with loved ones in the church. When you are so use to hiding the "sinful" parts it makes you become uncomfortable with youself as person. Which leads to creating a wall between you and others. If that ...

Re: Survey: alcohol consumption
The bible doesn't prohibit drinking alcohol, it warns against/prohibits drunkiness. Alcoholic wine was a common beverage/drink in ancient cultures when Jesus supposedly lived on earth. It would have been weird for someone not to drink alcoholic wine in that culture. The prohibition against drinking...

Re: Repression in the CofC
YES, YES, YES. Repression/suppression has created this overarching feeling of shame. I’m still working to over it. It would have been helpful to acknowledge all the nuances of our humanity. To realize that imperfection is okay. I’ve been fortunate to confide a few members about some sinfulness. To m...
