Re: Shrinking Presbyterian

A few years ago, the denomination split over LBGT issues. Same thing the Methodists are doing currently. I don’t know how that affected total members, but it couldn't have helped.

Where did you go after the Methodists?
I am not attending any church right now. My rural area doesn’t offer much variety.

Re: The Methodists

The denomination is experiencing a major division. The stated reason is whether gays and lesbians can be married in the church, by Methodist pastors. However, underlying themes are MONEY and POLITICS. Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and one branch of Lutherans (ELCA) had similar splits in past years. ...

Re: New here-left 16 years ago

What a painful history you have. I hope you will find our board a supportive place. We have gone in different directions, but we all recognize the harm done to us by our time in the COC.

Re: Funny videos about Harding University

Moogy: That is really interesting, I wondered why I had never heard anyone mention it before. However thinking about it the churches I know about in TN do not make direct contributions to the colleges, but they totally support them, David Lipscomb is regarded as too liberal in general, Freed Hardem...

Re: Funny videos about Harding University

But Florida College is NOT supported by churches. Individual Christians can donate. That is why it is the “approved college” for Non-Institutional COCs.

Re: Back again

You have lost your mother, your sister, and your cousin, albeit in different ways. I am sorry and I hope pleasant memories of the distant past can comfort you, while you can let go of the recent painful memories and experiences. It is the sickness of their COC doctrine that separates you from your s...

Re: Preachers becoming lawyers.

I dated a girl who father was a minister. She said he wasn't religious and just took up the ministry because it was the easiest work he could find. He didn't go to church after he retired. I can see someone thinking that the work of a COC preacher could be easy. I think it would be difficult to bec...

Re: Best books on CoC history

I thought I might want to read this, too, so I checked Amazon. Almost $30 for a Kindle version, so I will pass. It occurred to me what a bizarre notion it is that the COC represents the “Ancient Faith.” First century Christians would not recognize the COC. If you want an ancient Christian faith, loo...

Re: Attended sister's pseudo liberal church

The thing that somewhat bothered me from a philosophical point is they have special events which they call "committment to Christ" for very young children, much like the Catholic Church has Christenings/Infant Baptism. This to me seems to go against the protestant tradition where religiou...
