Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

At a CofC in my area a number of years ago, the old ladies objected to preaching on Galatians, you know the Galatian Heresy type stuff, and as a result of their responsive input, 5 ministers demonstrably walked out all at once during a Sunday morning service, one I know ended up at an Independent C...

Nice picture of Br. Garrett. But he is posed in front of a cross, which never would have been allowed in the churches I attended.

My nephew was a mainline COC preacher, later a minister for Disciples of Christ. He is currently a Unitarian Universalist minister. 😱

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

I had a pitch pipe and was trained to use it and would have but for one thing. At the congregation I attended there were two people who believed it constituted instrumental music in the worship. My dad and a man from his congregation did not speak to one another for YEARS after they had a disagreem...

Re: Best books on CoC history

There is a rather pricey academic book titled “The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement.” Different sections were written by different authors, including one short piece by my nephew. My nephew was a mainline COC preacher, later a minister for Disciples of Christ. He is currently a Unitarian ...

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

The coC where I grew up had singing classes for those who wanted to participate. We were fortunate to have a man who majored in music education. Besides, he had a great voice. Later, the church I attended as a young adult had such classes, with a good but less talented leader. We learned to follow t...

Re: new here

Welcome. Even though I have been out for nearly 40 years, there are things I miss. I had a groups of friends that were close, and I haven’t found that anywhere else. It wasn’t real friendship, since it was dependent on me staying in line with COC teachings. But I still miss those days.

Re: Mixed Swimming discussions

Have y'all ever looked at "modest swimwear", or "modest clothing" on Google? They have clothing now that the cofc in our past would have completely loved. We really didn't have anything back then to wear. I never learned to swim because of the "modest swimming" thing.....

Re: Ridiculous reasons for splits....

I was allowed to attend other churches’ events, but not if they conflicted with the COC services. I remember going to Vacation Bible School with a family that lived behind us. It was a Nazarene Church. I was concerned that maybe I shouldn’t pass their collection plate, because that might be supporti...

Re: Anti churches

Colleges also qualified as institutions to which the anti churches would not send money.

The missionary society split happened earlier, though.
