Re: Unleavened unsalted bread for communion

Using bread and wine/juice would have had no meaning to them. I love that the missionary was culturally competent enough not to have crackers and Welch's imported for the indigenous people's communion. You know how some people stand out as you look back over your life? Well, here was a CofC mission...

Re: Preachers becoming lawyers.

I dated a girl who father was a minister. She said he wasn't religious and just took up the ministry because it was the easiest work he could find. He didn't go to church after he retired. I can see someone thinking that the work of a COC preacher could be easy. I think it would be difficult to bec...

Re: Back again

I am grieving with you and would be doing the same thing as you in your situation. Seems like you have really tried to remain open, but there's really nothing you can do when others condition their love for you on your believing what they demand you to believe.

That's really amazing! I remember the proverbial "but we KNOW Christ was not born on Dec 25th so it can't be his birthday".

Re: Best books on CoC history

If anything, he was more of a "unity in diversity" advocate, and didn't agree with the distortions and derailment he saw in the cofc during his lifetime. Ah, yes, I remember the CofC saying “In Essentials, Unity; in Non-essentials, Liberty; in All Things, Charity,” yet to me that in and o...

Wow, your sister's CofC really does seem to me to be an outlier!

Was he a CofC minister? What did his daughter think of religion?

Re: Unleavened unsalted bread for communion

You can read lengthy explanations on both sides of the issue of using regular or unleavened bread in communion online. It's not an issue for me, but bothers some a lot. I remember a professor at ACC who had been a missionary somewhere where the native population did not have bread as a mainstay, nor...

Re: Leading singing/Shape notes and hand movements.

I'll try. You can find a lot on it by Googling it as well. But briefly, these are just my words: You'll never hear the term "Galatian Heresy" in the CofCs. But the term simply describes or summarizes the fact that Paul's letter to the Galatian church was written because they had turned to ...
