Disfellowship stories/issues?

I always heard a lot of talk about the practice of disfellowship in the 60's and 70's sermons at the CoC but it never happened where I went. Although people talked about places it had occurred. There were even sermons about it. One time they announced their was a plan was for the elders to start vis...

Re: Revelations

From what I read it is just a crazy jewish apocalyptic genre writing by a person with knowledge and belief in Jesus, it is hard to understand how it is considered canonical (and many have challenged its status since its canonization. It portrays a God opposite of the one we see in the rest of the NT...

Re: Christmas at Church?

Wasn't Halloween also considered devil worship by many, I don't remember at the CoC many people having object ions, but I worked with an evangelical who was solidly opposed to it.

Re: Salvation by Faith alone? Parable of the vineyards

I just read what Bart Ehrman wrote about the subject of faith vs works and my conclusion is that it is an argument that we cannot really resolve or even fully understand. First this may have been referring to Gentiles converting to Christianity. They did not have to follow Jewish law since they were...

Re: Pre WW2 CoC

When I was little (in the 50s) there was still a feeling in the church that politics were outside the building. This was just post WW2/Korea, and many of the men had seen military service, so that was not something that was opposed, but it was also not celebrated. The message from the pulpit was th...

Salvation by Faith alone? Parable of the vineyards

I remember constantly being told that faith alone was not sufficient for salvation. I recently came across the parable of the Vineyards (Matthew 20:1-16 not in other gospels)where workers hired at the end of the day were paid the same as the ones who started work at the beginning of the day. I wonde...

Re: Christmas at Church?

What I remembered was not bad, the preachers would say something to the effect that Christmas was not a religious holiday and it was not the birth of Jesus. I knew a very few people who did not let their children celebrate Christmas, but most just regarded it as a national holiday and celebrated wit...

Re: Women in Bible Classes in non-institutional churches participation

It is interesting to me that most people here with experience in a NICOC had both bible classes and allowed women to play a role in them. My understanding is there was a group that did not believe in bible classes separate from worship, it may have been in years before the experience of people here....

Deathbed conversions/baptisms

I remember at least one preacher in the church I attended as a child used to tell stories about people dying in hospitals wanting to be baptized. Often they had a bathtub big enough for this and sometimes even had to hold their hands over the tracheostomy tube/tracheostomy to perform the immersion. ...

Women in Bible Classes in non-institutional churches participation

I was told that in non-institutional CoC Bible classes that women attend but are not allowed to participate in discussions. I am sure this varies with the church but do others have any info or knowledge on this?
