Re: Non-negative, happy memories
When I first moved here to San Diego, the church had a really good young adult group. We spent a lot of fun Sunday afternoons rollerblading at the beach, other nights at the movies, watched Jesus Christ Superstar on Easter, etc. The guy who was the unofficial then official YA minister helped me get ...

Re: Bible Studies All The Time
RSV was the One True Translation of my youth, later replaced by the ESV, although I did know of a KJV-only church in our area, and NIV was popular at Harding -- especially a particular study Bible, which I could go upstairs and check the name of, but that would be work. ;) I do recall learning some ...

Re: Jimmy Allen
Just As I Am was never my favorite, but thanks to Jimmy Allen, I now cringe whenever I hear it -- thankfully, it's not popular among the Disciples, as far as I can tell.

Re: Bible Studies All The Time
Even the NI church I attended had a library, and it was probably more used than the library at most of the churches I've attended. I ended up running it, actually, and it became after-service kid hangout -- I upgraded the small building toy set to some Duplos, and the kids would pick a VeggieTales o...

Re: Christians and counseling those with STDs
That's the theory, but all it really does is make people not bother with the allegedly-useless condoms when they do it anyway.Melanie wrote:That statement has one purpose only -- to scare people into not having sex.

Re: Christians and counseling those with STDs
The final straw for me with the NI church I attended for a few years was when the preacher claimed, during Sunday night class, that condoms are "useless to prevent AIDS" -- which is not and has never been true. But the elders were more upset by me calling him on it than by him spreading li...

Re: Christians and counseling those with STDs
You can get STDs from rape, too, and college campuses are one of the locations date rape is most likely to happen. THe campus health center has people trained to do the testing and counseling, plus I'd hope there's a local Planned Parenthood. This is something that should be left to the professionals.

Re: Wednesday Nights
We did it a few different ways over the years...sometimes everyone met in the auditorium before classes, then again after; sometimes we went straight to classes, and just met after. I don't think we ever met before but not after, though. The time changed a few times, too -- needed to be early enough...

Re: Church Attendance
I don't think my dad ever took days off, other than the occasional vacation / holiday, in contrast. Well, parts of some Saturdays, maybe, but there was still prep for Sunday that couldn't be done earlier.
