Re: Things you don't miss about the c of c

5. BINGO! When my husband and I left, one particular elder (he's the "head hauncho" who always spoke for the others) told us he saw that my husband changed and was affected by reading/studying Crazy Love by Francis Chan a few years ago. (insert ALL the eye rolls here) It's like they all t...

My sister-in-law still refers to "the male nurse" every single time she runs across a nurse who happens to be a man.

Re: Another Question about NICOC

I've never been a member of an NI-CoC that didn't allow it. My wife and I were married in one. R. J. Stevens sang a solo! Most people now get married at wedding venues, so it's becoming a non-issue anyway. Neither of my sons nor any of my nieces and nephews got married in a church building. They all...

Re: CoC congregational splits

I somehow managed to avoid this, although the church I was at when I was a toddler may have split during that time. This would have been around 1962. And why? Was it over "the issues" (i.e. "institutionalism")? Not exactly. It was because the preacher wanted the elders to publicl...

Re: Hi All

Hi, JW! Welcome! I'm a closet atheist. I got outed once and had to duck back in the closet because I have a son who is a minister, and my brief conversation with him led me to realize that being truthful wasn't going to go well. Other son is an atheist and my outing had to do with that, and his fath...

Re: Texas Monthly Magazine bum steer awards

This is awesome! And to think I just dropped my subscription. My dad subscribed to TM from the very first issue. He didn't keep it more than 5 or 6 years, as I recall, but I've subscribed off and on through the years. I remember after Jimmy Carter was elected that they ran an issue advising Texans h...

Re: The Church is Under Attack!

Yup! I still hear it occasionally. But it's nowhere near as common as "separate and apart from the Lord's supper..." That'll probably go away, too. Twelve or thirteen years ago I attended "chapel" at Florida College when one of my kids was there. One of the students making some a...

Re: Leaving CoC

I'm in the closet for this very reason! Only it isn't parents, it's one child. The subject was broached and it didn't go well. However, his brother is no longer going to a CoC and, though there's been some pretty big conflict, their wives seem to be keeping them together. I'm glad for that! And mayb...

Re: Anyone here heard of Daniel Johnston? He's a genius

I've seen the "Hi, how are you" graffiti in Austin many times. Awhile back Apple was using one of his songs to advertise the latest Mac.

I had no idea he had CoC roots.
