Re: Religious Narcissism

Oh my goodness Cootie! This video is a gold mine of information. Point 2 - Lack of compliance = lack of sincerity. I was accused of that when I sent my exit letter. The term used in connection with my lack of participation, attendance and comments was (drum roll please) "committed", I wasn...

Re: Judaism and thinking about God

I understanding blaming of Trump. He is very vocal and all over the news and personally I don't think he helps his cause with the broader audience with some of the things he says or how he delivers them. Unfortunately, hatred for immigrants and particularly Jews is nothing new. Through history they ...

Re: Rebooting

Good to see you again! I too, have very conflicting emotions about how I have come to understand things. I file 13 religion altogether several years ago and just tried to default to being a good person. In my quest to understand all the goop I grew up with and all the twists and turns of CoC doctrin...

Re: Halloween

I grew up in the very conservative CoC and anything celebrated was not celebrated at the building. So all parties, potlucks and fall fest/halloween was always at someone's home or the local community center. Some would not even eat a sandwich in the building if they were alone doing work! I always h...

Re: cofc dreams....

I saw a anniversary or birthday photo of someone I knew growing up that belonged to the "royalty", he married the elder and elderette's daughter. Sorry for the use of ette but I think it conveys the reality of this royal family, he was leading the men's meetings but she held the reins of ...

Re: cofc dreams....

I think I had the most vivid dream along the lines you described. I saw a anniversary or birthday photo of someone I knew growing up that belonged to the "royalty", he married the elder and elderette's daughter. Sorry for the use of ette but I think it conveys the reality of this royal fam...

Re: Stopped going 5 months ago and crickets...

The "not hounding" part was strange for me as well. I sent an exit email, it was read at church and that was it. However, after a few months someone talked with my wife and expressed dismay because of the response to my email was read as well and it wasn't mean but as this lady stated &quo...

Re: Appearances

It did feel kind of good to rant. I think the comment about ignoring the beam is an understatement. I remember them going on and on about following only the bible, or where is that specified in the bible when they question things in Orthodoxy. BTW, many and all of their "problem" practices...

Re: Appearances

What really bugs me is why do I always have to be careful how I talk now? Family can make remarks or talk about church stuff with their condescending tone and comments but if I were to talk about activities or our church service . . . all hell would bust loose and we would be badgered to show BCV fo...

Re: Long journey to Orthodoxy

There is quite a bit more than just the creed distinction. The Bishop of Rome began to see things much more centrally located (Pope head of all) instead of conciliar, where all were equal. It is interesting to note that of the of the 5 Metropolitans, Rome, Alexandria, Jerusalem, Antioch and Constant...
