Re: Lingering doubts
I absolutely had those doubts at first when I left. I'd say the doubts lingered for several years, and even caused me to go crawling back a couple times. Now that I'm completely out of the COC and no longer try to hide it from family or old COC friends, I feel so much better. I've joined a local com...

Re: Invited to take CoC correspondence course today
Haha, I always have to laugh when I see COCers say that they urge people to study the bible with an open mind. They're among the most closed minded people to ever open their bibles. It reminds me of when they condemn other denominations for "twisting the scriptures to fit their beliefs" wh...

That Time of Year Again...
Gospel meeting season! Everyone's least favorite week of the year (though they would never actually admit it). That week where your whole life outside of church gets put on hold and you get to experience the stress of Wednesday night every night! Rush home from work, hurry and get the kids' homework...

Re: Survey: How old were you when you left the COC?
I began thinking about leaving at 18 when I first went off to college. I began to gradually miss more and more, eventually feeling guilty and going back more after doing the "walk of shame". Finally the guilt left and I began to realize just all the things that were wrong with the COC and ...

Re: Why Jon left
Yep, but it was never supposed to be, "We have to go to church." It was "We GET to go to church" and be bored out of our minds for two hours Sunday morning...and an hour on Sunday night...and another hour on Wednesday night. How lucky we were!

Re: Why Jon left
Was sleeping actually accepted? I feel like at least in the church I always went to it wasn't so much accepted as just inevitable. The services were so lifeless and dull that most people were going to fall asleep or at least doze off and there wasn't much anyone could really do about it. Then again ...

Re: An Observation
Sounds very familiar. It's all about "the church". A similar thing I never really noticed until I left and saw someone one point it out on here is that in the COC you rarely hear people say, "Jesus says..." but always "The bible says..." They don't tend to talk about Je...

Re: Why Jon left
He kept repeating something like "all the good we were doing .. it didn't matter if we didn't have the truth".. basically all your charity is nothing if you don't have a CoC sign hanging off your building. The sad thing is this is exactly how many COCers believe. I heard sermons preached ...

Re: That's weird/I don't get it, so it must be wrong
I remember years ago an old COC friend of mine was complaining about people who observe Lent. He said "It's not in the New Testament so we're not authorized to do that!" I asked him why it bothers him so much that people observe Lent since it personally has no effect on him whatsoever. He ...
