Re: Disfellowship stories/issues?

I was dis-fellowshipped back in the day by a church in South Carolina. Didn't hurt my feelings. I wish I had kept the letter though. King St. CoC, Beaufort, SC. You could have framed it, if you have that type of sense of humor. :D I knew exactly who wrote it too. The preacher came clean with me and...

Unrealistic Expectations

My parents actually stayed at my house for a Sunday. This is very rare since Dad is hard-pressed to find a substitute for his failing NI church. So they want to go to a CoC near my house. My mother starts spazzing out about how it has to be 'conservative' and whatever. Too lazy to do their own resea...

Re: non-institutionalism and the baptistry

If you drank water from an NI baptistry you would be likely to come down with cholera or dysentery. It's not changed out very often. There are places that only fill the baptistry when they are going to use it and in that situation the thing sits uncleaned collecting dust, bugs, etc for months at a t...

Re: Instrumental music in Church Weddings

I remember this quite well. Must have been the mid 90s. Anyhow, there was a wedding at the church (the girl was already pregnant) and there was a boom-box. I don't remember the songs but there were definitely some tunes not of the hymnal.

"and a Spanish language service - indicating a reasonably sized Hispanic element nowadays."

That is really fascinating. I live in Southeast Ohio now and the two most common churches are Church of Christ and Methodist. I've never seen a Church of Christ advertising a Spanish service.

Re: Christmas at Church?

I have seen CoCs in the Ohio Valley that have come around to Christmas. The NIs still mostly soil their pants over the thought. My grandmother calls me on Christmas and says, "Happy ho-ho day." I think it is extremely immature. But if she and Grandpa didn't have hate they wouldn't have a r...

Re: Pre WW2 CoC

Many years ago my old man was supposed to have a debate with the local hillbilly institutional minister. Dad was bringing in J.T. Smith to do the heavy lifting and the other bloke thought he was going to get Guy Woods. Except, he didn't. So the debate got canceled and we had a Gospel meeting with J....

Re: Deathbed conversions/baptisms

Sounds like my old man. He hates the death bed conversions. That parable about the 11th hour has never made sense to him. If you didn't labor under the hot sun all day you might not be a Christian. This reminds me of a rather unfortunate event in my own ministry. I was the Jr. minister at the church...

Re: Stephen the only Christian martyr in the NT

In liturgical churches he's quite a big deal. He is numbered among the first 7 deacons and has a feast on December 26. Also, my seminary professor had an entire unit on Acts 7. That is fascinating, do liturgical churches celebrate other martyrs (even though Stephen is the only one explicitly mentio...
