Re: Pre WW2 CoC
In the very earliest days of my CoC preaching I encountered a few old-timers who had come up in that era. From what I gathered it was indeed transitional. They loved the added services - more chances to preach. But what they really always wanted to talk about was how Gospel Meetings could go every n...

Re: Stephen the only Christian martyr in the NT
In liturgical churches he's quite a big deal. He is numbered among the first 7 deacons and has a feast on December 26. Also, my seminary professor had an entire unit on Acts 7.

Re: Best books on CoC history
I had a frustrating conversation with my father, a CoC minister, a couple of nights ago. He got off on some tangent about how the CoC had existed in England since the early 1600s and the American CoC was a continuation of that project. Utter crap. You can't claim every non-conformist English splinte...

Re: CoC new translation?
Thanks for that response, Shane. I just learned today that the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod did eventually launch a translation project, so my other post is not totally accurate. They cooperated with the ELS (another Lutheran group) and a seminary to make a Bible. It is called the Evangelic...

Re: CoC new translation?
I do. When I took Greek in Anglican seminary the introductory course used some materials by a CoC guy out of Pennsylvania whose name I cannot recall. I know a fellow who has been living in L.A. for 4 or 5 years who studied Biblical language at a real college in the Illinois state system. And there w...

Re: CoC new translation?
To make a halfway decent Bible translation you need a commitee, which sounds suspiciously like an institution. Between the general disdain for organization and the pool of qualified translators not amounting to more than half a dozen men, a Bible translation could never emerge from the NI wing.

Re: Similarities/Differences in CoC and Primitive Baptists
I used to do some radio preaching on 93.something out of Pikeville, KY. The Baptist Bible hour was on immediately before my church's 1/2 hour show. It was produced by some Primitive Baptists from Cincinnati. The expectation was that if the CoC show wasn't pretaped, whoever was going to be on that mo...

Re: New here
Welcome! My kin finally stopped pressuring me to go about 3 years ago. Of course, I am ordained in another denomination and wear a collar to Sunday service regardless of the church I'm at. Can you imagine a person showing up to a CoC in a clergy collar?
