Re: Before Campbell ? Rumney Marsh and Bow Lane
I can't locate my source at this time, but way back in the cobwebbed corners of my memory I seem to recall that these churches practiced infant baptism. Regardless, the CoC is grasping at straws. The CoC refuses to admit that they are an American denomination that had it's earliest beginnings with B...

Re: The Fatal Disconnect of the CofC
As pastor Alistair Begg says, "It takes the whole book to make a whole Christian". The Old Testament is the story of how God refused to give up on a stubborn rebellious people, and to this day He still refuses to give up.

Re: Toxic Legalism in Christianity
Yep, sounds exactly like the CoC that I know. "Toxic legalism" is an excellent term to use.

Re: Holy Spirit IS the Bible
I also know of a CoC congregation that changed the song Amazing Grace. They changed the line "the hour I first believed" to "the hour I first obeyed". So now they are trusting in their own human effort and performance, instead of trusting grace. How sad.

Re: Holy Spirit IS the Bible
Ivy, in speaking of the early CoC church fathers, Barton Stone and his side of the movement were devoted believers in the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians. They always claimed that the Spirit was still active, and that Christians needed be open to the power and urgings of the Spir...

Re: I’m struggling
The CoC has been in serious denial for years and years, claiming very loudly that they are not a denomination. However, anyone who honestly looks at history can see that the CoC is an American denomination that started at Cane Ridge, Kentucky in the early 1800s. You mean it didn't go underground af...

Re: I’m struggling
Hi Lisa, I read your post with a great deal of interest. I'm very glad that you found Celebrate Recovery. My wife and I have been helping out with a local CR program for several years and have seen many people during that time who have been blessed. CR is ready and willing to accept you as you are. ...

Re: The walk of shame
When the coc says they look exactly like the first century church, I just have to shake my head. They look nothing like it. It's like which of all those NT churches do they want to look like... Galatia?... Corinth?.. They were all fraught with many more issues than just trying to decide how many so...

Re: Evolution and Creationism
I homeschool. I'm teaching my kids Big Bang and evolution, and I've told them that Genesis 1 doesn't have to be taken literally and that you can believe in an old earth/universe and still believe God did it. In our history last week, we were talking about times when the church thought the Sun revol...
